Somber Serenity "Singular"

Dark Metal aus meiner Landeshauptstadt München. Unterstützt man doch gerne, seine Landsleute, oder?
Gut, was bringt uns die Musik. Grundbasis ist eine Mischung aus Doom/Death der Marke MY DYING BRIDE und Gothic Metal-Einflüssen der unkitschigen Art, wobei die fünf Herren sich aber auch mal im Black Metal ("Tragedy Star") oder Death Metal ("The Severance") bedienen, wechseln aber diese Einflüsse geschickt ab, so dass in vielen Fällen eine gute Spannung aufgebaut wird, die den Hörer durchaus zu fesseln in der Lage sind.
Dabei gelingen SOMBER SERENITY einige sehr gute Riffs und durch die variierende Intensität der Kompositionen bauen sie eine interessante Atmosphäre auf, die sich durch die Songs zieht. Häufig doomig und düster untermalen die klagenden, klaren Vocals von Daniel Varoß diese Atmosphäre noch, durch seinen variantenreichen Gesang, der von jenen klaren Vocals über Death-Grunts bis zu höheren Schreien reicht, kommt hier in Gemeinsamkeit mit der Atmosphäre und Aufbau der Songs streckenweise ein gewisses OPETH-Feeling auf.
Meisterwerk dieser abwechslungsreichen Mischung ist zweifelsohne das mehr als 14-minütige, abschließende "Nemesis My Childe", in dem man die verschiedenen Stimmungen und Atmosphären auf hervorragende Art und Weise miteinander verbindet und wohl so weit als bisheriger Höhepunkt des kreativen Schaffens der Band gelten.
Trotz des sehr reif klingenden Song-Writings sind mir persönlich aber ein paar der Songs insgesamt etwas zu lang geraten, wodurch sich ein paar Längen eingeschlichen haben, die dem Ganzen doch etwas von der zumeist schleppenden Dynamik nimmt. Doch abgesehen davon gibt es überraschend wenig zu kritisieren an diesem Debüt, das für ein Erstlingswerk doch beeindruckend reif klingt.
Die Bezeichnung Dark Metal ist sicherlich eine sehr strapazierte, jedoch in diesem Falle kann man sie SOMBER SERENITY getrost verpassen, auch wenn man das Niveau der genannten Bands (noch) nicht erreicht, Fans von eben jenen sollten sich "Singular" auf jeden Falle einmal zu Gemüte führen!

OK, what does the music bring. Basic basis is a mix of Doom/Death in the MY DYING BRIDE-vein and Gothic Metal-influences of the unkitsch-kind, while the gentlemen also take their share of Black Metal ("Tragedy Star") or Death Metal ("The Severance") as well, but they mix these influences well, thus building a good tension within the songs that at times can truly hold the listener in a vice-like grip.
SOMBER SERENITY come up with some very good riffs and they manage to create an interesting atmosphere by the varying intensity of the compositions. Often doomy and dark, the clear, the wailing clear vocals of Daniel Varoß add to it, by the variable singing, which reaches from clear vox to Death-grunts and higher screams, in union with he atmosphere and the songs' structure more than once a certain OPETH-feeling is creeping into the music.
Masterpiece of this very variable mixture without doubt is the 14+ minute-closer "Nemesis My Childe", where they masterfully combine the different moods and atmosphere in a way that makes this track stand out as the pinnacle of their creation to date.
Despite the very mature sounding song-writing a few of the songs have turned out a little too long, taking away some of the mostly sluggish dynamics of the album. But if you have no problems with that, then there is only surprisingly little to criticise with this debut, which sounds impressively mature for a first effort.
The categorisation "Dark Metal" surely is a very far stretched within the scene, but in this case I can put SOMBER SERENITY in there without a doubt. While they (understandably) do not reach the mentioned bands' level (yet), fans of them should take a good listen into "Singular"!
